Customs Department records show over 1,300 traders charged sales and service tax illegally, with all having now repaid the collected amounts.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has identified 1,325 traders who collected Sales and Service Tax without being registered to do so.
The Ministry of Finance stated these traders operated from 2024 through January 2026, unlawfully charging and collecting the tax.
All identified traders have since repaid a total of RM76.7 million to the Customs Department.
The ministry issued the clarification in a written parliamentary reply to Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead.
It emphasised that any unregistered trader who has charged SST must return the amounts to Customs under the law.
For cases uncovered via audit or investigation, repayment must be made based on a formal Demand Notice.
The Customs Department also offers instalment payment facilities for repayments, subject to approval.
This consideration requires the submission of relevant financial documents to the respective Customs station.
