KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — Anthony Loke today said the Transport Ministry (MoT) cannot and will not interfere if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) decides to investigate the problematic Aerotrain project at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“If there’s already a report made to MACC, then we will leave it to them because that is their jurisdiction to investigate any parties involved.

“So if MACC receives any reports, it is up to them to take the next step, I can’t interfere or take any sides,” Loke told reporters here.

He said that the Aerotrain project was awarded to the contractors by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and not by his ministry, which serves as a regulatory body.

“This Aerotrain project was awarded to Alstom Transport System Sdn Bhd, IJM Constructions Sdn Bhd and Pestech Technology Sdn Bhd by MAHB.

“MoT is the regulator to MAHB because they are the holders of the airport concession through the operating agreement.

“And the Aerotrain is also subject to a licence under the Land Public Transport Agency,” he said.

Previously, Loke ordered the Land Public Transport Agency to investigate MAHB following repeated disruptions to the Aerotrain service at KLIA.

He said his ministry is currently waiting for MAHB’s detailed report before taking further action.

The Aerotrain has been plagued by reliability issues since its relaunch in July after a reported RM456 million upgrade.

Despite a reported 99.19 per cent operational availability, recurring mechanical and signalling problems – including power system failures caused by dislodged components – have led to public frustration, flight delays, and questions over maintenance standards.
