Army chief General Azhan Md Othman urges personnel to uphold integrity and adapt to modern warfare, addressing geopolitical and hybrid threats

MELAKA: The Chief of Army, General Datuk Azhan Md Othman, has called on all army personnel to unite, maintain integrity, and cultivate a “will to win” in facing current and future security challenges.

He stated that an uncertain geopolitical and geostrategic situation, driven by major power rivalries, has significant spillover effects impacting national security.

“The rapid development of world technology also influences modern warfare methods. Therefore, the Army cannot be left far behind and must immediately step forward to face the future warfare concept based on modern technology,” he said during the 31st Army Chief’s Command Address at Dataran Parawood, Kem Terendak.

He also emphasised that the military faces non-traditional threats like cross-border crime, climate change, natural disasters, and hybrid threats, which affect national sovereignty and interests.

“At this moment, the Army is also being hit by a storm of turmoil leading to a deficit of trust in all of us. Every day we are criticised and scorned, as if there is no end,” he added.

Azhan outlined that the army’s command philosophy of “will to win” is not just a desire but a firm resolve to succeed in all aspects including the field, training, readiness, results, religion, and trust.

He detailed two main guiding principles: identity as army personnel, and a warrior ethos of piety, loyalty, sacrifice, discipline, sincerity, and trust.

The General stressed that every officer and member must execute their duties transparently and with integrity, and will not compromise with anyone lacking integrity, involved in corruption, or abuse of power.

He also highlighted the importance of effective leadership, future leader development, high intellectual capacity, technological proficiency, and coordinated, effective training.

Azhan called for all army personnel to reunite and work together to restore the glory and dignity of the security force.

The address was delivered during a combat parade involving 38 officers and 1,356 other ranks from the 10th Brigade (Para), 21st Special Service Group, and three divisions.

The 31st Army Chief’s Command Address was also broadcast live on social media platforms to ensure all army personnel could hear and appreciate its essence.
