Malaysian border agency foils attempt to smuggle 100 tonnes of undeclared rice worth RM640,000, seizing two container lorries in the operation.

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has foiled a major rice smuggling attempt at the country’s northern border.

The agency seized nearly 100 tonnes of undeclared rice with an estimated value of almost RM640,000 at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex.

AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam commander SAC Mohd Nasarudin M. Nasir said two container lorries were inspected following a tip-off.

Inspections at about 4 pm yesterday uncovered 49,950 kilogrammes of rice hidden inside each trailer.

The total seizure amounted to 99,900 kg of rice, with the two lorries valued at about RM420,000 also confiscated.

“The rice was estimated to be worth RM639,400, while the two container lorries, valued at about RM420,000, were also seized for further action,” Mohd Nasarudin said in a statement.

He said the rice was hidden inside the containers in a believed attempt to evade checks at the country’s entry point.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994.

It has been handed over to the State Padi and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action.

Investigations into the agents or companies involved are still ongoing.
