KUANTAN: The new BAS.MY Kuantan bus service is strengthening the city’s public transport network ahead of the East Coast Rail Link’s launch next year.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative enhances daily mobility and serves as a vital complement to the upcoming rail project.
He stated the service will provide an efficient connection between urban and rural areas.
“Next year, with the completion of the ECRL, the public in Kuantan will have another choice of public transportation that is faster and more efficient, thus complementing the existing bus system,” Loke said.
The minister was speaking at the launch of the Stage Bus Service Transformation 2.0 programme.
The service, operated by Sanwa Tours Sdn.
Bhd, has been running for almost a month, replacing the previous Rapid Kuantan buses.
It has already recorded strong ridership since its introduction.
Loke revealed the service recorded 129,000 passengers in January, averaging nearly 4,000 people daily.
A significant investment has been made to support the new network.
The government has allocated RM15.6 million per year under a five-year contract, funding 55 new air-conditioned buses.
The service currently covers areas under the Kuantan City Council and the Pekan Municipal Council.
Loke said this implementation is the first phase, with expansion to secondary cities pending approval from the Ministry of Finance.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting public transport across different areas.
“So far for rural areas, the government has provided the Interim Stage Bus Support Fund scheme which gives subsidies to operators like MARA Liner to ensure the continuity of services,” he added.
The new buses are designed to offer a more comfortable and reliable service.
All vehicles are new and adhere to strict schedules to prevent disruptions for users.
To encourage public transport use, the government is also offering free fares for specific groups.
Senior citizens, people with disabilities, and school students can ride for free by registering for a concession card.
