Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stresses adherence to law and mutual respect in handling sensitive religious and community issues.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a firm warning against taking the law into one’s own hands regarding disputes over houses of worship.

Speaking at a Chinese New Year celebration, he emphasised that Malaysia is a nation founded on the rule of law which all parties must respect. “This country is a nation that must abide by the law, a nation of laws,” he said.

He acknowledged the existence of issues, controversies, and differences within society. “But the ultimate interest is to protect the stability, sanctity of our beliefs and, at the same time, the unity of our world,” Anwar stated.

The Prime Minister reiterated that compliance with laws on constructing places of worship is essential for maintaining national harmony. He specifically addressed recent sensitive topics in Selangor and other states.

These include houses of worship built not according to regulations and proposals for new pig farms. “We all know the rules: what is and what isn’t allowed,” Anwar said.

He urged all parties to handle such matters properly and with mutual respect. “Do not insult Islam, the religion of the Federation and the majority of Muslims in this country,” he cautioned.

Anwar added that there should also not be any views that insult the practices of other communities. He stressed that resolving these issues within the legal framework is paramount for national stability.
