Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil praises DG Suhaimi Sulaiman’s three-year tenure, citing digital transformation and new content formats for RTM.

PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his appreciation for the contributions of Department of Broadcasting Malaysia director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman (pic), whose service ends on February 22.

Fahmi said he was proud of the work and reforms Suhaimi introduced at Radio Televisyen Malaysia over his three-year tenure.

“I am very proud of the work and creativity he has brought to the Department of Broadcasting Malaysia after about three years of service, including several achievements that, in my view, cannot be forgotten,” Fahmi told reporters.

He highlighted the challenge of shifting audience habits from traditional television to mobile content consumption.

Fahmi stated that Suhaimi had successfully navigated this shift by adapting the department’s mindset towards artificial intelligence, social media, and industry competition.

Key reforms included establishing a Digital and Interactive Media unit to harness young talent for digital content.

Suhaimi also expanded RTM’s presence on platforms like TikTok and introduced a new 7.44 pm news bulletin.

“This fulfils the aspiration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Bahasa Melayu be prioritised as the national language, while English is also an important language for us to master,” Fahmi said.

Another initiative was the development of micro-dramas under one minute for the RTM Klik platform.

Fahmi said this content suits fast-paced viewing habits for commuters and is expected to air this year.

“Suhaimi played a significant role in realising this initiative,” he added.

The minister wished Suhaimi success in his understood return to the business sector.

The process to appoint a successor will be initiated by Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah.

Suhaimi confirmed his departure on February 10, after leading RTM since January 2023.
