A director-general and a director are remanded for five days over alleged misuse of RM900,000 in funds and submitting false claims for umrah travel.

KUALA LUMPUR: A director-general and a director of a government department have been remanded for five days on suspicion of misappropriating approximately RM900,000.

Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah issued the remand order until February 16 following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court.

Both male suspects, aged in their 50s, were detained yesterday after arriving to give statements at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

Initial investigations suggest they abused their power by using workplace financial allocations for personal interest.

The suspects are also believed to have submitted false claims of about RM60,000 for performing umrah while on official duty in Jeddah last year.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests when contacted.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 and Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

It also involves offences under the Penal Code related to dishonest misappropriation of property and criminal breach of trust.
