MACC chief commissioner takes legal action against Bloomberg for a report he says damaged his reputation and the commission’s integrity.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has commenced legal action over a recent Bloomberg report.
His solicitors, Messrs Zain Megat & Murad, stated they were instructed to initiate the action and seek all available legal recourse.
“We are instructed to state that the reporting, suggestions and insinuations contained in the said publication are libellous, irresponsible and seriously misleading,” the firm said in a statement.
It added the report caused serious injury to Azam personally and to the MACC’s institutional integrity.
The law firm asserted that Azam has not breached any law or public service requirement.
“At all material times, he has complied fully with all applicable asset declaration obligations imposed on public officers,” it stated.
It clarified that any share acquisitions and disposals were properly declared through official channels.
This included declarations via the Human Resource Management Information System in accordance with requirements.
According to the firm, the shares referenced in the report had been disposed of before its publication.
It added that the relevant declarations and documentary records exist and are verifiable.
“Our client remains steadfast in his commitment to integrity, accountability and the rule of law,” the statement concluded.
It is understood the firm issued a letter of demand to Bloomberg’s offices in the United States and Malaysia.
Azam had previously clarified he no longer holds any shares in any company.
He stated all previous share transactions were conducted transparently and in full compliance with regulations.
He added that his trading account is now empty and can be verified with Bursa Malaysia.
