Kuala Lumpur police launch Op Selamat 25 with increased enforcement to curb congestion and accidents during the Chinese New Year rush.

KUALA LUMPUR: Expect to see more police officers on the roads during the festive season, as 337 personnel will be deployed round the clock under Op Selamat 25 to keep traffic moving and roads safer across the capital during the festive rush.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said officers and rank-and-file personnel will be on duty 24/7, with enforcement carried out without any gaps.

“This does not include manpower from other agencies such as Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Fire and Rescue Department and other local authorities, who will also be on the ground with us,” he told reporters today after launching Op Selamat 25 for 2026.

Fadil added that digital monitoring data from the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) shows Kuala Lumpur already records an average of about three million vehicles on the road daily under normal conditions.

“With the festive season, we expect traffic volume to increase further. This will be a significant challenge for us,” he said.

He confirmed that several hotspot areas have been identified for intensified enforcement and traffic control, particularly in busy zones such as shopping districts and high-footfall areas.

“These are among the key hotspots for ensuring the safety of road users, including those travelling for leisure and visiting shopping areas,” he added.

Commenting on worsening traffic congestion in the Klang Valley in recent weeks, Fadil said the primary challenge stems from the increasing number of vehicles on the road, compounded by higher movement of people during festive periods.

“As vehicle volume increases, especially during celebrations, traffic congestion becomes inevitable.

“Our efforts are focused on diffusing congestion, harmonising traffic flow and improving smoothness as much as possible. However, public cooperation remains crucial,” he said.

He urged motorists to avoid causing obstructions, comply with traffic regulations and follow traffic dispersal instructions issued by enforcement officers.

Op Selamat 25 will run in conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2026 festive season from Feb 15 to Feb 20, 2026, under the theme ‘Share the Journey, Share the Comfort, Safety Comes First’.

This year’s operation focuses on three key issues during the festive rush:

  • Keeping traffic congestion in check throughout the holiday period;
  • Cracking down on traffic offences that contribute to accidents — especially fatal crashes; and
  • Stepping up public awareness to prevent house break-ins while people are away celebrating.
