Much to her disappointment, her boyfriend gifted her a phone worth just over RM1,000, on her birthday far from the iPhone she had been hoping for.
Turning 30 was supposed to be a milestone full of joy — but for one Malaysian woman, her birthday quickly became a lesson in disappointment.
In an anonymous post on XUAN’s Facebook page, she shared that she had been dropping hints to her boyfriend that she wanted the iPhone 17 for a birthday present as she is currently using the iPhone 14 which was previously purchased by him.
Much to her disappointment, her boyfriend gifted her a phone worth just over RM1,000, far from the iPhone she had been hoping for.
In the past, he had always bought her things she liked — bracelets, handbags, small surprises — so she assumed he would know this time too.
“On top of that, he only arranged a simple candlelight dinner. My emotions got the better of me.
“I lost control, smashed the phone on the ground, walked away, didn’t eat the dinner and ignored him for several days.”
After calming down, she began questioning herself and their relationship.
“I even started to feel that maybe he doesn’t love me that much. If a man truly loves me, shouldn’t he try his best to give me what I want?
“When I see my friends receiving luxury brands or being taken overseas by their boyfriends or husbands, I feel envious.”
But the story didn’t end there. He later came to apologise — and she found out he had already bought a ring and planned to propose.
If this had happened before her birthday meltdown, she thinks she would have said yes. But now, after seeing their very different expectations about love and effort, she’s questioning whether they are truly compatible.
“If you were me, and you realised that your understanding of ‘love, effort and expectations’ differed so greatly, would you accept his proposal — or reject it?”
