MACC chief stresses firearms proficiency as essential for tackling high-risk syndicates, with annual shooting tournaments key to maintaining operational readiness

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is placing greater emphasis on firearms handling skills for its personnel. Chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said this focus is crucial to ensure the highest level of readiness for increasingly high-risk assignments.

He stated that intensive training, such as the annual shooting tournament, is a vital platform to sharpen personnel agility and focus. “Every action in the fight against corruption must be guided by accurate facts, sound strategy and unwavering courage to safeguard the nation’s integrity,” Azam said in a statement.

He drew a parallel between investigative work and marksmanship, noting that composure and precision are key to hitting any target. The remarks were made in conjunction with the 2026 MACC Shooting Championship held at the Malaysian Prison College Shooting Range in Kajang.

MACC Security Division director Zuhairie Abu Bakar emphasised that disciplined firearm use forms the foundation of professionalism for enforcement officers. He said it ensures compliance with all established regulations.

In the tournament, Sriraman Renganathan from MACC Selangor won the Individual Male Centre Fire title. Zatun Najmiah Mohd Sabri from the Investigation Division secured the win in the women’s category.

The Investigation Division was crowned overall champion of the Centre Fire group category. The Forensic Division topped the Plate Drop category.

In the VIP Individual category, first place went to Kedah MACC director Mansur Mohamad’s representative. Zuhairie Abu Bakar took second place, with Azam Baki finishing third.
