RISDA may propose cloud seeding if extreme heat persists, as drought in northern states hits latex yields and smallholder incomes
ALOR SETAR: The Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) is prepared to propose cloud seeding operations if the current extreme heat and prolonged drought continue to worsen.
RISDA chairman Manndzri Nasib said the prolonged hot weather is severely affecting leaf growth, latex yield and smallholders’ income.
Areas like Felda Chuping, Felda Rimba Mas and Felda Mata Ayer in Perlis are among the hardest hit.
“If the situation becomes critical, cloud seeding will be necessary,” he told reporters after officiating an event here.
He warned that without intervention, the community would be affected and trees could die, forcing costly replanting.
Manndzri stressed that if conditions become serious, RISDA will have no choice but to carry out cloud seeding.
He added that extreme heat and drought are recurring challenges that require proactive solutions.
The authority is currently studying the best methods to maintain soil moisture and tree health.
Measures under review include the use of specific fertilisers and modern technologies to sustain leaf health and photosynthesis.
“When leaves dry out, photosynthesis is disrupted and latex yield drops,” he explained. Using technology and fertilisers can help trees retain moisture and stabilise production, he added.
Manndzri also reaffirmed RISDA’s commitment to keeping rubber prices competitive. He said maintaining good prices is crucial to encourage younger generations to continue in the rubber tapping industry.
Low prices could discourage them from inheriting the work, threatening the industry’s future sustainability.
