Melaka’s digital graves project enters data verification stage, with 556 plots identified and a new cemetery site handed over to address local burial needs

MELAKA: The state’s Digital Grave initiative has progressed to a phase of updating and completing detailed records.

This follows the initial basic digitisation of 556 identified cemetery lots across Melaka.

State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said the goal is to ensure each record is accurate, organised, and easily accessible for future generations.

The project began with four cemetery areas in Masjid Tanah, using Kampung Krubong as a pilot site.

“The Digital Graves’ pilot project in Kampung Krubong has shown encouraging progress, with 552 grave plots in the village identified and recorded within less than two weeks of implementation,” he said.

He added that about 150 plots have been fully verified, with the remainder undergoing verification with next of kin.

Rais stated the initiative aims to create a comprehensive digital database of grave locations, deceased details, and next-of-kin information.

This data will be accessible via an application to help families locate graves systematically.

He said the data can also serve as a reference for determining cemetery density within specific communities.

In a related development, residents of Kampung Krubong received a new 0.4-acre cemetery site.

The land was handed over by the developer to mosque authorities to meet local burial needs.

Rais said the new site is expected to address a shortage of burial space for several housing estates and surrounding villages.
