Nik Nazmi reminds public of PH and BN pledges, calls for independent investigation of MACC chief Azam Baki
KUALA LUMPUR: Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad today reminded the public of promises from both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) manifestos, urging that Malaysia’s anti-graft body be shielded from political influence and corruption.
“Sometimes we make excuses, saying this cannot be done because this is no longer a PH government—it’s a unity government.
“But if we look at the PH manifesto, and even the BN manifesto from the last general election, both clearly state that the appointment of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief must be made through Parliament.
“So there is no excuse. If we have the power now, what better use is there than to implement meaningful change?” Nik Nazmi told the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally here at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
Reflecting on Malaysia’s recent history, Nik Nazmi recalled, “Ten years ago, we gathered to fight 1MDB corruption. Today, we gather for the same cause.
“We do not want anyone misappropriating the country’s funds. The only way to fight this is to ensure the anti-corruption agency is independent.”
In the last general election, PH’s manifesto explicitly called for the nomination of the MACC chief commissioner to be reviewed by a bipartisan Special Parliamentary Committee, ensuring the appointment of a neutral candidate free from political agendas.
BN’s manifesto also outlined similar safeguards.
“On fundamental issues like this, the public must have confidence that we are truly committed to fighting corruption,” he said.
Nik Nazmi also urged that any investigation into MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki be conducted independently, outside government influence, and that he step aside during the process.
“The MACC chief must be investigated not by government officers, but by independent figures.
“And during that period, he should step down or take leave,” he said.
Rallying the public to remain vigilant, Nik Nazmi added, “If we could make change in the past, we can do it again. Long live the people!”
