Johor Darul Ta’zim must defeat Vissel Kobe to stay in the top eight and advance to the AFC Champions League Elite knockout stage.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) face a decisive home match against Japan’s Vissel Kobe, needing a victory to remain in contention for the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) round of 16.

Head coach Xisco Munoz acknowledged the quality of their opponents but emphasised his team’s readiness for the challenge.

“We know we are facing a very good team. It will be a tough match, but this is our challenge,” Munoz said at a pre-match press conference.

He stressed the importance of starting with full energy and a strong personality while playing at home.

Munoz highlighted that concentration for the full 90 minutes and balance in both attack and defence would be key against the dangerous Japanese side.

“We know Japanese teams are very strong in set pieces. They build up from the back, control the midfield and attack very fast,” he added.

Striker Bergson Da Silva said the team is embracing the pressure of the decisive match, prioritising the team’s objective over personal achievements.

“It doesn’t matter who scores. Even if we win 1-0 with a goal from a defender or the goalkeeper, that is enough,” Da Silva stated.

Vissel Kobe coach Michael Skibbe anticipates a tough challenge despite his team having already secured qualification for the next round.

Skibbe cited a long journey from Osaka and a short pre-season as factors affecting his squad’s preparation.

“Several players were not brought to Johor Bahru due to injuries, and we also have a domestic league match next week,” he explained.

He added that all available players are ready to deliver their best in what is expected to be a high-intensity encounter.

“Logically, we never come to a match to lose. We will always play to the best of our ability and try to win,” Skibbe affirmed.

JDT currently sit seventh in Group A with eight points from seven matches.

Vissel Kobe lead the group standings with 16 points.
