Communications Minister urges media clubs to propose a systematic welfare mechanism for former practitioners ahead of National Journalists’ Day.
JOHOR BAHRU: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged state media clubs to draft a specific proposal to strengthen the welfare of former media practitioners.
He said such a proposal could be considered ahead of National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) in June to establish a more organised assistance mechanism.
“Perhaps before HAWANA, GKMM can consider a proposal for us to look at the forms of welfare that can be provided to former media sector workers, so that it can be structured more effectively,” he said.
Fahmi noted that some retirees feel sidelined, necessitating a structured approach for those needing ongoing social and welfare support.
He also called on every state media club to proactively identify veterans in need and channel suggestions to the ministry.
During an event here, two former media workers personally received cash and basic necessities from the minister.
Former Media Prima cameraman Idrus Rahmat, 55, and former Oriental Daily journalist Low Sock Ken, 68, are the 643rd and 644th recipients of the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative.
The programme was introduced in April 2023 by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama.
