A Malaysian woman goes closer to resignation after receiving a RM150 Chinese New Year bonus, sparking debate online over bonuses, expectations and workplace fairness.

AS Chinese New Year approaches, workplace bonuses often become a focal point for employees anticipating financial recognition for their efforts.

However, for one Malaysian, the issue of her bonus became a tipping point as she felt that she wanted to resign after receiving just RM150.

“The most solid reason why I want to leave this year. What kind of bonus is this? Might as well call it an angpow,” she wrote in a viral post on Threads.

She also alleged that she had yet to receive her confirmation letter from the company, despite repeatedly requesting it.

As her post circulated widely online, many users shared their own experiences with bonuses, some of which were reportedly even lower than hers.

“I didn’t even get a bonus, sis,” one user quipped.

“I used to work tirelessly day and night as long as I was promised a bonus. In the end, I only got RM50. Now I’m running my own roadside stall,” another commented.

However, not all netizens shared the woman’s grievances. One pointed out that a bonus is generally a discretionary gesture from an employer and not a guaranteed or fixed entitlement.
