A Malay resident receives a mystery angpow and heartfelt handwritten letter from a considerate Chinese neighbour this CNY

ON the occasion of Chinese New Year, a mystery letter with a red angpow landed in a Malay resident’s mailbox.

In a Threads post, Ema Hashim shared that she was puzzled when she received an anonymous letter containing an angpow with RM20.

She realised it must not have come from a Malay neighbour, as it included a Chinese New Year angpow.

“So I knew the person wasn’t Malay. But one thing that really left me speechless was how polite they were,” she said.

The letter was written by a neighbour seeking permission to dispose of their tiles in the RORO bin (Roll-On, Roll-Off dumpster) that Ema had rented for her house renovation.

“SubhanAllah, we never would have even thought of doing something like that, right? Anyway, thank you for the angpow, and Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and all my Chinese friends,” she wrote.

Netizens were equally charmed. Qila Azali commented that it was adorable, noting the letter had corrections made using ‘liquid paper’, a nostalgic stationery for many students now grown up.

Haiza Najieha added that handwritten letters like this mean more than the angpow in today’s digital age.

“This kind of thing really warms your heart… even if they didn’t give an angpow, just receiving a letter like this would already feel nice. The angpow is just a bonus. It’s a blessing to meet someone with common sense,” she said.
