Netizen urges Malaysia to make fireworks illegal; online debate erupts as others defend festive tradition and multiracial celebrations.

AS fireworks light up the night sky across Malaysia, not everyone is celebrating.

A Threads post questioning the sheer scale of this year’s fireworks and firecracker displays has sparked debate online, with one netizen asking whether the government can — or should — make them illegal altogether.

“Can the Malaysian government make fireworks or firecrackers illegal?

“I think this year is too much… you can see stalls selling cheap firecrackers in different towns.

“The 12am rule doesn’t help much, especially in kampung area.

“This is causing too much noise and air pollution, not only stress to animals but for a lot of us.

“We can’t even have a conversation with our family properly. I understand this is a celebration, but do we really need to burn so much ‘money’?” the post read.

In Malaysia, fireworks are a common sight during major festivals including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali.

Over the years, certain types of fireworks have been legalised for sale during festive periods, though time limits and safety regulations apply.

For many Malaysians, fireworks are more than just noise — they symbolise joy, prosperity and celebration.

However, the post quickly drew strong reactions — with many Malaysians defending the tradition.

“Ai, this is so strange?! Come on lah, it’s only once a year mah. We all enjoy the fireworks, they’re so pretty… We need more!” one user called shukrikhari commented.

“‘Do we need to burn so much money?’ Is it your money? Not your money, not your concern. Let others choose to spend their money however they want.

“As for the firecrackers, it’s a once in a year festivity. Let people enjoy their festivity. Don’t like it? Do something about it for yourself. Don’t impose your belief and dissatisfaction onto others,” gavithrar opined.

“Wait till she complains during Raya, Merdeka, Deepavali, Christmas, New Year. Just let it be la, as it makes Malaysia, Malaysia. If cannot stand it then do like some others and go holiday during this time lo,” xienyao wrote.

Meanwhile, wankidd commented, saying, “Man, seeing the love from other races makes me giddy and warm.”
