60 families in Manjoi get one-off assistance, with more aid expected as a major RM108 million flood mitigation project is set to begin
IPOH: A total of 60 families affected by flooding in the Manjoi area have received one-off assistance from the Perak state government and the Tambun MP’s Service Centre.
The aid was distributed to recipients registered with the Mukim Hulu Kinta Penghulu Office as of yesterday.
Kinta District Disaster Management Committee chairman Zulhisham Ahmad Shukori said this was the first phase of distribution. He expects the number of recipients to increase as more people come forward to register.
“A full report will follow once all matters involving the distribution of aid to flood-affected residents have been finalised,” he said after officiating the handover session.
Zulhisham expressed hope that the assistance would help ease the burden of residents ahead of Ramadan.
The flooding on January 16 was attributed to extraordinary rainfall exceeding 80 millimetres. A temporary relief centre at Dewan Kampung Tengku Hussein in Manjoi was opened yesterday, sheltering 26 victims from 10 families.
Separately, Zulhisham confirmed that a contractor for Phase Two of the Sungai Kinta Flood Mitigation (RTB) project was appointed on January 14. The RM108 million project is currently in its final coordination stage before implementation begins.
He stated that further processes are under the Department of Irrigation and Drainage. The project is expected to help mitigate frequent flooding in the Manjoi area.
