European football’s governing body launches investigation after Real Madrid star accuses Benfica’s Prestianni of racist insult during Champions League match.

UEFA has opened an investigation into allegations of discriminatory behaviour following an incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

The probe was announced after Vinicius accused the Argentine midfielder of racially abusing him during Tuesday’s Champions League knockout phase play-off first leg in Lisbon.

The match was halted for over 10 minutes after the Brazilian international complained to referee Francois Letexier. Vinicius alleged that Prestianni called him “mono”, the Spanish word for monkey, following a confrontation between the players.

The incident occurred moments after Vinicius scored a sublime goal. He was subsequently shown a yellow card for celebrating in front of the home crowd at the Estadio da Luz.

Prestianni, 20, who covered his mouth with his shirt during the exchange, has denied racially abusing the Real Madrid star.

Real Madrid players strongly condemned the alleged abuse. England full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold described the incident as “disgusting” and “a disgrace for football”.

France captain Kylian Mbappe called for Prestianni to be banned from the competition. He stated that such behaviour is unacceptable in Europe’s premier club competition.

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho criticised Vinicius for his goal celebration, suggesting it incited players and fans. He argued that players should celebrate in a respectful manner.
