“He got too comfortable and stopped working,” adding that he relied entirely on the EPF’s lump sum payout until it eventually ran dry.
A Malaysian’s anonymous confession about how his father spent his RM800,000 EPF savings and has now has to look for a job in his 60s has now gone viral.
In an X post, he shared that his father retired at the age of 55 and had received approximately RM800,000 in EPF (KWSP) savings — only for the money to be wiped out within a few years.
According to him, part of the EPF money was used to renovate their home — which he said was reasonable.
However, things took a turn when the father allegedly began spending on unnecessary items and “investing” with friends who later turned out to be scammers.
“He got too comfortable and stopped working,” he wrote, adding that he relied entirely on the lump sum payout until it eventually ran dry.
“He allowed his friends to loan money because they knew he had received his EPF money and there were many who wanted to take advantage of him.”
To make matters worse, the father did not settle many of his debts and now the home has been repossesed by the bank.
In the end, his mother, a housewife, used up her own savings trying to cover the financial damage.

Now in his 60s, the father wants to return to work — but it hasn’t been easy.
“Not all jobs are easy to get. Who wants to hire an older person?” he wrote, even though he believes he has strong sales skills.
Becoming an e-hailing driver is not an option, he said, due to his poor night vision and unfamiliarity with navigation apps like Waze.
With two younger siblings still studying, the family continues to face financial strain.
In her final message, he warned others not to become complacent — especially with rising living costs. He stressed that even RM800,000 can disappear quickly without proper planning, particularly if someone stops working entirely after retirement.
“Your savings will finish like water, trust me.”
