‘Grey’s Anatomy’ actor Eric Dane dies at 53 following a courageous fight with ALS, his family confirms.

WASHINGTON: Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on the long-running medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, has died at age 53.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement cited by CBS and other US media outlets.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the family’s statement said.

Dane was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, last year.

The San Francisco-born actor made his television debut in a 1991 episode of ‘Saved by the Bell’.

His breakout role came in 2006 when he joined the cast of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ as the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan.

He appeared in 139 episodes of the series until 2021.

Dane also featured in the HBO drama series ‘Euphoria’.
