Deutsche Welle correspondent Alican Uludag held in Ankara on charges of spreading false information and insulting the president.
ANKARA: Turkish authorities have detained a veteran correspondent for Germany’s Deutsche Welle broadcaster.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that Alican Uludag was detained and a criminal investigation was launched based on some of his social media posts.
He will be brought before prosecutors on Friday. DW said Uludag was arrested in Ankara and taken to Istanbul police.
The broadcaster said the allegations relate to a post on X, made about a year and a half ago, criticising Turkish government measures that led to the release of suspected Islamic State militants.
DW Director General Barbara Massing called the accusations baseless. She said the arrest was “a deliberate act of intimidation and shows how severely the government is suppressing press freedom”.
DW added that his apartment was searched and IT equipment was confiscated.
