The health ministry reports 596 new TB cases in the sixth epidemiological week of 2026, bringing the national cumulative total to 3,161 cases this year.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported 596 new tuberculosis (TB) cases nationwide for Epidemiological Week Six (EW 6/2026).

This brings the cumulative number of cases recorded so far this year to 3,161.

Sabah has recorded the highest number of cumulative cases at 755, followed by Selangor with 596.

Sarawak follows with 332 cases, Johor with 280, and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with 244.

Other states have reported the following totals: Kedah (181), Penang (172), Perak (154), Kelantan (121), Pahang (103), Terengganu (74), Negeri Sembilan (62), Melaka (48), Perlis (21) and Labuan (18).

In a statement, the ministry stressed that the fasting month of Ramadan is not a cause of TB transmission.

However, it noted that increased social gatherings during the period may lead to closer and more frequent contact among people.

The public is advised to practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette and ensure good ventilation in enclosed areas.

People are also urged to wear a face mask if experiencing symptoms or when in crowded places and to seek medical attention for a cough lasting more than two weeks.

The ministry said the risk of infection is higher in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces, especially if someone with active, untreated TB is present.

“However, the actual risk depends on factors such as duration of exposure, ventilation and individual health status,” the statement said.
