Ampang police are searching for three suspects after a 70-year-old woman was allegedly hypnotised and robbed of jewellery worth RM10,000.

AMPANG: Police are hunting three suspects believed to have hypnotised (pukau) and cheated a 70-year-old retired civil servant out of jewellery worth RM10,000.

The incident occurred at a shopping centre in Jalan Pandan Prima yesterday at 11 am.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Khairul Anuar Khalid said the victim was approached by a married couple and another woman believed to be an Indonesian national.

“The suspects claimed they possessed a lottery ticket worth RM300,000 and sought the victim’s help to redeem it on the grounds that they did not have identification cards,” he said in a statement today.

The victim was also promised a reward for her assistance.

Khairul Anuar said the foreign woman then held the victim, causing her to feel as though she had been hypnotised.

The elderly woman subsequently agreed to help the trio.

She was taken in a Proton Waja car with the three suspects.

While in the vehicle, one suspect claimed the lottery ticket had been exchanged for a cheque for the victim to cash.

However, the suspects then demanded a RM30,000 deposit from the victim as a guarantee.

They claimed this was to ensure she would not abscond while cashing the cheque.

“As she did not have cash, the victim handed over a gold necklace and bracelet worth about RM10,000 as collateral to the suspects,” Khairul Anuar said.

The victim was then taken to the Ampang Point Maybank branch to cash the cheque.

Once she was dropped off from the car, all three suspects fled the scene.
