
Flooding worsens in Sabah with over 4,600 evacuated, while Sarawak opens its first relief centre in Kuching as heavy rains persist.
KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sabah deteriorated further today, forcing more people from their homes. Meanwhile, Sarawak activated its first relief centre in Kuching as heavy rains continue to affect both states.
The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported a significant increase in evacuees. As of 4 pm, the number of flood victims had risen to 4,652 people from 1,799 families.
These victims are being housed at 25 relief centres across the three worst-hit districts of Pitas, Kota Marudu and Paitan. The district of Pitas saw evacuees increase to 2,013 people from 787 families.
Paitan recorded a sharp rise to 716 victims from 234 families, up from just 192 people earlier in the day. The number of victims in Kota Marudu remained steady at 1,923 people from 778 families.
In Sarawak, the state Disaster Management and Emergency Management Agency opened a relief centre at the Darul Istiqlaal Mosque in Kampung Sungai Maong, Kuching. The centre was activated at 11 am today.
A total of 63 victims from 17 families have been evacuated to the centre so far. Authorities stated that the number of evacuees is continuing to rise.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department had predicted continued humid weather in Sabah and Sarawak throughout this week. The forecast includes rain in several areas following the passage of monsoon winds entering the country.
