KTMB security arrests suspect with 28 prior records after foiling 250-metre cable theft attempt on Kempas Baru–Kulai line, preventing major disruption.
JOHOR BAHRU: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) foiled a major cable theft attempt along the Kempas Baru–Kulai route last night. The incident led to the arrest of a local man suspected of cutting approximately 250 metres of signalling cable.
The railway operator’s Train Control Centre first detected a signalling system disruption on the route at about 8.50 pm. This prompted an immediate patrol and inspection by the KTMB Auxiliary Police team along the affected stretch.
Personnel on duty detected a suspicious individual at Kilometre 728.25 at about 11.30 pm. The suspect is believed to have been involved in cutting cables and attempted to flee upon realising the presence of security personnel.
Swift action by the AP personnel led to the suspect’s arrest at 11.47 pm. A subsequent inspection at the scene revealed that four-core cables had been severed.
Several bags containing cable-cutting tools believed to have been used in the activity were also discovered nearby. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Kulai District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Preliminary police checks revealed that the arrested man has 28 previous criminal records. The theft attempt was successfully prevented before the stolen cables could be removed from the site.
