Kota Marudu’s flood disaster is declared over, but 24 relief centres remain open in Pitas, Tawau, and Paitan as the state’s overall situation improves

KOTA KINABALU: The flood disaster in Kota Marudu district has been officially declared over.

The declaration was made at 11 am following improved weather and a full recovery of water levels.

District Officer Meirin Sugara, who chairs the local Disaster Management Committee, stated the decision was based on information from response agencies conducting ground surveys. Consequently, all Temporary Relief Centres (PPS) in Kota Marudu have been closed.

Meirin confirmed that the homes of affected residents are now safe to inhabit.

He also urged field response agencies to assess the need for integrated post-disaster activities to ensure a smooth recovery process.

Meanwhile, the flood victim count in Pitas district has risen to 2,171 people from 1,078 families as of noon.

This is an increase from 2,120 people from 1,054 families reported earlier in the morning.

The situation in Tawau remains unchanged, with 245 people from 55 families still housed at relief centres.

In Paitan, the number of victims decreased slightly to 850 people from 268 families.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat confirmed that a total of 24 relief centres remain operational across the three affected districts.
