JAIS arrests a 65-year-old man in Rawang for allegedly declaring himself a prophet and performing acts contrary to Islamic law, following a viral complaint

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly claiming to be a prophet.

He was detained along with three other individuals, including a woman, at a premises in Rawang.

JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said initial investigations revealed the man claimed to have met Prophet Adam in person during the day.

He also allegedly told followers he met Prophet Muhammad in the form of light at night.

“The individual claimed to have met the prophets two to three times a week,” Mohd Shahzihan said in a statement.

He said these alleged encounters occurred over the past two to three years at a national park in the country.

His followers reportedly believed he was a messenger of God.

They considered his actions as divine commands, such as not needing to pray or fast if tired or unwell.

The arrest was made under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.

This section pertains to performing acts or ceremonies relating to Islam that are contrary to Islamic law.

Investigations are also being conducted under Section 8 of the same enactment.

This section covers declaring oneself a prophet or claiming knowledge beyond human understanding.

Mohd Shahzihan said the arrest is expected to resolve a complaint that went viral on 9 February.

The complaint involved an individual claiming to be a prophet and influencing his family.
