Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim assures Unity Government partners the July 12 congress is for internal assessment and will not compromise public interest
BUTTERWORTH: Parties in the Unity Government need not worry about the DAP’s upcoming special congress.
Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim said the July 12 event is a platform for the party to reflect on its performance within the administration.
Sim, a Central Executive Committee member, emphasised the party will not betray the current government or neglect public interests.
He addressed concerns following DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s announcement about the congress.
“I know that there are a handful of component party leaders who might be worried,” Sim said at a DAP Penang Chinese New Year Open House. “I want to emphasise, don’t worry.”
He added that whatever decision DAP makes, it will not turn its back on the people’s interests.
The event was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and DAP advisers Lim Guan Eng and Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang.
Loke had previously stated the congress would let representatives decide if party office-bearers should resign from government posts.
He confirmed the party’s 40 MPs will continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government until the end of its term.
Sim, who is also Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, explained the congress allows for nationwide self-assessment.
This includes evaluating the party’s position and performance in the Unity Government.
He advised Penang DAP members to gather public feedback before the congress. This ensures the views brought to the meeting truly reflect the people’s voice.
