Individuals filing urgent police reports are now exempt from dress code rules in emergencies, ensuring immediate assistance and victim protection

KUALA LUMPUR: Individuals making reports at police stations during emergencies are now exempt from dress code requirements.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said a circular issued on December 29 makes the exemption effective immediately.

He explained the exemption applies to urgent cases requiring immediate assistance.

This includes criminal offences, road accidents, security threats, and traumatic situations like rape or domestic violence.

“In such cases, the welfare and safety of complainants take priority,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

He stated the directive ensures rights are protected and should not be constrained by attire rules.

The directive has been communicated to all police headquarters nationwide for consistent implementation.

Shamsul Anuar was responding to a question from Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor).

The MP had proposed a law requiring police stations to accept reports regardless of attire.

The deputy minister said the existing administrative directive is sufficient.

He added there is no need to enact new legislation on this matter.

The directive aligns with a 2025 public service circular on enhancing customer relations.

This circular allows agencies to set appropriate dress codes for counter transactions.
