A bus plunged into an icy river in Nepal, killing at least 19 people including a British tourist and injuring 25 others in the latest deadly crash on the Himalayan nation’s roads.

KATHMANDU: A bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into an icy river in Nepal, killing at least 19 people including a British tourist.

The vehicle was travelling from the tourist city of Pokhara to the capital Kathmandu when it fell more than 200 metres into the Trishuli River in Dhading district early on Monday morning.

Senior local police officer Prakash Dahal confirmed one British citizen was among the dead, with a total of 25 other passengers undergoing treatment for injuries.

Dahal also stated that one Chinese person and a New Zealander were among those injured in the devastating crash.

Mohan Prasad Neupane, information officer at the district administration office, confirmed the rescue operation had been completed by dawn.

“The injured are undergoing treatment,” Neupane said.

This tragic incident follows a similar disaster in July 2024 when two buses carrying more than 50 people were swept into the same river after a landslide.

Deadly crashes remain relatively common in the Himalayan republic due to a combination of poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
