Sarawak’s technical group calls for stronger rice, livestock and fisheries output to cut import reliance, ensure supply and stabilise prices.

KUCHING: The Technical Working Group on Price Stabilisation in Sarawak has called for the state to strengthen its rice production, cattle and poultry farming, and fisheries sectors.

Enhancing these areas and their supply chains would make Sarawak more resilient and less dependent on external factors.

Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who chaired the meeting, said higher production would ensure consistent output, reduce waste, and boost domestic supply.

He stated this would make supplies of key foods like rice, meat, chicken, eggs, and fish more secure and stable in the long term.

“This initiative could have clear benefits: higher incomes for farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen; growth in local processing industries; a stronger rural economy; and better-quality, more affordable food for consumers,” Nanta said in a Facebook post.

He added that price monitoring from farm to retail can be strengthened to make the market more transparent and fairer.

The government, via the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), will ensure prices remain fair and affordable for the public.

“The government will continue to tackle the cost of living in a consistent, focused, and responsible manner, in line with the Malaysia MADANI spirit,” he said.
