KESUMA ramps up stakeholder engagement on the Gig Worker Act 872, focusing on social protection and fair income ahead of its March enforcement.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Human Resources is intensifying engagement with gig economy stakeholders ahead of the Gig Worker Act 2025’s enforcement expected by end-March.

Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan stated that enacting this new law is a complex process requiring careful balance to protect workers without harming industry sustainability.

He highlighted a recent session allowing stakeholders to voice views and submit improvement suggestions.

“We held discussions while examining issues related to social protection, contribution security, dispute resolution mechanisms, fair income structures, and the role of platform providers in ensuring a balanced sharing of responsibilities,” Ramanan said in a Facebook post.

He will bring these discussion points to future sessions with other stakeholders, including platform providers.

Deputy Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan also attended the session with various delivery rider, makeup artist, interpreter, and e-hailing associations.

Ramanan emphasised that sound policies come from understanding on-the-ground realities, with direct worker input providing irreplaceable perspectives.

He noted that gig workers now form an essential part of the country’s economic backbone, with many as primary breadwinners or long-term career practitioners.

Therefore, he stressed that policy approaches cannot be halfway measures and must be comprehensive, realistic, and centred on worker well-being.

“No policy is drafted behind closed doors, as every decision undergoes a thorough consultation process,” he added.

He and the ministry’s top management will examine all views to ensure a sustainable and balanced protection framework for workers and the industry.
