A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan’s northeast coast, shaking buildings in Taipei but causing no immediate reports of damage.

TAIPEI: A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan on Tuesday, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei. The island’s weather administration reported no immediate damage from the tremor.

The quake had a depth of 66.8 km (41.5 miles) according to the weather administration. Its epicentre was located 16.9 km (10.5 miles) from the Yilan county government seat in coastal waters.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. The tremor briefly rattled buildings in Taipei.

More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016. A 7.3 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
