A TikTok seller claiming to sell the world’s first pastrami roti john for RM88 sparks heated debate among Malaysians over pricing, portion size and value.

A TikTok video by @thefat.burger has gone viral after the seller claimed he is selling the first-ever pastrami roti john in the world, sparking heated debate among Malaysians online.

The post has racked up over 50,000 likes, more than 900 comments and nearly 10,000 shares. In the video, the seller confidently showcases what goes inside the pastrami roti john, displaying thick slices of pastrami weighed at 150 grams before layering them into the bread along with sauces and other ingredients.

However, it was the price — RM88 for 150g of pastrami — that quickly became the main talking point.

Many netizens argued that the item was overpriced for what is typically considered a street-style dish.

Kenji commented, “You are selling it far too overpriced. The mark-up is too high.”

A.D wrote, “Only 150g of pastrami? Overpriced.”

Another user said, “How much is a kilo of beef, bro? At least put 250g or 200g, it would be more worth the price. If it’s like this, I’d rather buy Alif Burger. A 100g wagyu burger is only RM12 and tastes better than pastrami.”

Hamizan Shafiq650 expressed his concern, writing, “First time I’m commenting on TikTok. Don’t say I’m not supporting, but please review the price. It’s not even a restaurant experience, just roadside food to eat at home. Stop pretending…”

He later added, “To those who are backing this up and criticising others who say the same thing, don’t be surprised when other roadside stalls like night markets or Ramadan bazaars start setting prices like this. Because YOU ARE ENABLERS….”

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism.

WanEyla commented, “Good business concept bro, different from others. The name is already there, only business people understand why the price is like that. Wishing you success, insyaAllah will support.”

P u t r a I q b a l 97 wrote, “Why are so many people unhappy in the comments? If you think it’s expensive, just don’t buy. Simple right?”

“When he tells the price people criticise, if he doesn’t tell the price people complain, If it’s expensive, just make it yourself,” AR added.

Meanwhile, one supporter, snappyvish, offered a balanced take: “I support you from the beginning and wish the best for your business. But bro, I feel it’s slightly overpriced. I understand the viral concept like Katz Deli — there it’s around 300g for about USD30 (around RM120). Maybe start at RM50 first as a promotion and see the support.”
