Ramadan bazaar tau fu fa replaced by jelly, leaving customers disappointed and calling for accurate food labeling

CRAVING a traditional dessert only to be disappointed is always frustrating and that’s exactly what happened to a netizen at a Ramadan bazaar.

On Reddit, user marcheurdenuitnsy shared that he had bought two packs of tau fu fa, expecting the smooth, silky soy pudding he loves.

Instead, when he opened the containers, he found something entirely different.

“It looked very shiny and bouncy like konnyaku jelly. When I tasted it, I was immediately let down. It was firm, almost like cincau or the black jelly you get at Chinese herbal tea shops. Stop selling it as tau fu fa if you’re using jelly powder. Call it soya jelly or soya pudding,” he wrote.

He added that he expected the tau fu fa to be like the one he buys from the TTDI bazaar, which would have been authentic and freshly scooped.

Another user shared a similar experience with an elderly vendor, noting that the so-called tau fu fa was watery and clearly just jelly.

When asked whether it might have been dadih — a soft milk pudding — the original poster clarified that it was firm and gelatinous, unlike a pudding texture.

Some Redditors drew humorous comparisons to other food disappointments.

Polymathicfun likened it to ordering char kuey teow only to receive a soupy bowl, saying, “It’s great to see food cross cultural borders, but seeing it butchered is saddening.”

Vikaash added that he was not criticising sellers based on race, but felt that tau fu fa from elderly Chinese vendors remains the most authentic and satisfying option.
