DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo backs a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe ‘corporate mafia’ allegations against MACC, citing need for transparency.

PETALING JAYA: Following calls by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke yesterday, DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo has reiterated the party’s support for the formation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the so-called “corporate mafia” allegations against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a Facebook statement, Gobind said that while MACC has dismissed the claims as baseless and originating from an anonymous blog, a self-issued denial is not enough.

“It is a fundamental principle of justice that no one should be a judge in their own case,” he said.

Yesterday, MACC strongly denied the recent international reports, calling the allegations “a recycled issue deliberately revived to tarnish the Commission’s image and reputation” and warning that unverified claims could erode public trust in lawful enforcement.

Gobind, who is also the Digital minister stressed that MACC’s credibility cannot rest on internal clearance alone.

“When the MACC’s integrity is questioned, a self-issued clearance does little to restore public or investor confidence,” he said, adding that an RCI would provide an impartial and transparent inquiry.

“The allegations are specific, naming individuals and companies, and referencing identifiable cases.

“There is sufficient basis for an inquiry, and the best option is an RCI equipped with statutory powers to conduct a proper and meaningful probe,” he said.

The DAP leader emphasised that the move is not about assigning blame but reaffirming MACC’s integrity.

“Whether the allegations are true or not, and what is to be done thereafter, is a matter for the RCI to decide.

“This is about strengthening, not undermining, the MACC — showing that all investigative and enforcement agencies are subject to inquiry and the rule of law,” Gobind added.

Yesterday, Loke told Malaysiakini that DAP will push for an RCI, arguing that the government’s response so far has been inadequate.

He said he would raise the proposal again at the upcoming Cabinet meeting on Friday, saying the gravity of the claims warrants a more powerful and independent mechanism than the special task force already announced.

Gobind said that the inquiry must be conducted as soon as possible, with full powers to ensure an effective and transparent probe.
