JULAU: An elderly man was killed after being shot with a shotgun along the corridor of a longhouse here.
The victim, 69-year-old Vincient Belingau, succumbed to a gunshot wound to his right shoulder at the Klinik Kesihatan Nanga Entaih.
Julau district police chief DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah said the incident occurred at Rumah Minis in Sungai Minus, Entabai.
Initial investigations indicate the victim was on the longhouse corridor after returning from an oil palm plantation.
“The suspect is believed to have run from the *ruai* (longhouse verandah) before firing a shot using a shotgun at the victim,” Alif Haiqal said in a statement.
A nearby witness reported hearing a gunshot before seeing the victim collapse.
The victim’s son, who was inside a room, came out after hearing the noise and found his father covered in blood.
Police said the suspect also pointed the shotgun at the victim’s son and issued a threat.
The son still managed to take his father to a clinic for treatment, but the victim was pronounced dead due to severe injuries.
Acting on information, police arrested a 43-year-old local man along the verandah of the longhouse.
Officers also seized a shotgun along with ammunition and several spent cartridges of various brands.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
The victim’s body has been sent to Sibu Hospital for a post-mortem.
