Malaysian authorities foil 863 attempts by 3,700 illegal immigrants over five years, seizing RM106.7 million in assets through dedicated maritime operations.
PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has foiled 863 attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country via sea routes over the past five years. These attempts involved approximately 3,700 individuals.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed the statistics today during the launch of Op Khas Pagar Laut 2026. He stated that from 2020 to 2025, the operation led to 344 arrests.
Sabah recorded the highest number of cases at 90, followed by Perak with 71 and Johor with 52. The total value of seizures during this period amounted to RM106.7 million.
“This statistic clearly shows that the government has never compromised with any syndicate that uses the sea as a gateway into our country,” Saifuddin said. He emphasised that intelligence sharing and integrated operations remain a priority.
The minister identified smuggling of daily goods, weapons, and drugs as key crimes using sea routes. Syndicates employ various tactics to deceive authorities.
The 2026 operation will commence tomorrow and run until April 10. It will involve 800 officers and personnel from multiple agencies.
A total of 275 assets, including ships, patrol boats, and aircraft, will be deployed. Monitoring and patrols will be conducted 24 hours a day leading up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The operation involves all agencies under the Home Ministry. It also includes cooperation with the Royal Malaysian Navy, Customs, the Marine Department, and the Fisheries Department.
“We believe that with the mobilisation of resources from all these agencies, it will enhance the effectiveness of this Op Khas Pagar Laut,” Saifuddin added.
