Flood evacuees in Sabah increased to 6,910 people from 2,282 families, with Tenom district seeing the largest surge in numbers.

KOTA KINABALU: The number of people displaced by floods in Sabah has risen to 6,910 as of 4 pm.

The evacuees are from 2,282 families, according to the Sabah Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat.

This marks an increase from the 6,732 people from 2,293 families reported earlier in the day.

Tenom district recorded the most significant surge, with evacuees rising to 5,246 people from 1,741 families.

The figure was up from 4,500 people from 1,507 families as of 8 am.

In Beaufort, the number of evacuees remained unchanged at 1,462 people from 467 families.

The figure in Membakut dropped to 202 people from 74 families, down from 441 people this morning.

Two temporary relief centres in Sipitang were closed at noon, allowing all 329 evacuees from 146 families to return home.

Floodwaters have currently submerged 93 villages in Beaufort, 46 in Tenom and 16 in Membakut.

All remaining evacuees have been placed at 34 relief centres operating since last Wednesday.

The floods have affected 155 villages across the three districts, disrupting residents’ daily activities.
