Mukah police praise new AI CCTV on Pan Borneo Highway to monitor traffic and reduce accidents, especially ahead of festive travel periods.

SIBU: Mukah district police have welcomed the installation of the first artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV camera on the Pan Borneo Highway.

Sarawak’s Public Works Department recently installed the AI CCTV at the Selangau P-turn, an area under Mukah police jurisdiction known for frequent accidents.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the timing is crucial with increased traffic expected for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri and school holidays.

He stated that the camera will enhance road user compliance as every movement is monitored, particularly for offences like driving against the flow.

“Any offence detected and recorded will be channelled to the Mukah IPD Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division for further action,” he told Bernama.

Sarawak Public Works director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris said the installation is a proactive step to strengthen safety and monitor public space cleanliness.

He added that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s smart city development aspirations.

The AI system is expected to enable more effective traffic monitoring, supporting accident prevention and improved traffic management in the Selangau section.

Muhamad Rizal confirmed that police will continue their usual patrols and enforcement in the area despite the new CCTV installation.
