Explosions and smoke reported in Dubai, Doha and Manama following a day of deadly Iranian missile and drone strikes across the region.

DUBAI: Fresh explosions were heard in the Gulf capitals of Dubai, Doha and Manama on Sunday morning. This follows a day of unprecedented Iranian strikes across the region in retaliation for US and Israeli attacks.

AFP reporters confirmed blasts in Dubai and Bahrain’s capital, Manama. In Qatar, correspondents saw thick black smoke rising on Doha’s southern horizon.

The new blasts extend a conflict that saw deadly Iranian strikes on the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday. Military bases and civilian infrastructure were also hit across the Gulf, with only mediator Oman spared.

Iran’s attacks have rattled a region long considered a haven of stability. They have also raised acute fears of a wider regional war.

On Saturday, Iran fired 137 missiles and 209 drones at the United Arab Emirates. The defence ministry reported fires and smoke reaching landmarks like The Palm and Burj Al Arab.

At Abu Dhabi’s airport, at least one person was killed and seven were wounded. Dubai International Airport and Kuwait’s airport were also struck during the barrage.

Qatari officials stated Iran launched 65 missiles and 12 drones towards their state. Most were intercepted, but the salvos injured eight people, with one in critical condition.

Smoke was seen pouring from US bases in Abu Dhabi and Manama on the first day of strikes. Manama is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

The oil-rich Arab monarchies are long-term American allies. They host several key US military installations across the region.

In Manama, Iranian attacks saw drones and shrapnel hit residential buildings. Social media video showed smoke and fire billowing from high-rise towers.

Saturday’s unprecedented barrage also targeted Qatar’s massive Al Udeid Air Base. Strikes additionally hit Riyadh and eastern Saudi Arabia.
