A woman discovers butterfly larvae in her nasi ayam madu bought at a Ramadan bazaar in Cheras, sparking food safety concerns

A woman was left shocked after discovering what she described as “free protein” — butterfly larvae — in the salad served alongside her nasi ayam madu, purchased at a Ramadan bazaar in Cheras.

The incident was shared via TikTok by user @Ayuumuchann, who had bought the dish for her breaking of fast on February 25. She subsequently lodged a report with the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKJ).

#mpkj #btho

“When I was about to eat, I noticed larvae on the salad leaves. This was extremely disappointing as it raises serious concerns about food hygiene and safety,” she said.

She added that when she informed the trader the following day, the response was far from satisfactory. “The seller showed no sense of responsibility — there was no apology, and they spoke rudely without any respect for the customer,” she claimed.

The woman urged the local authority to conduct a thorough inspection of the stall, stressing that food safety and cleanliness standards at Ramadan bazaars must be consistently upheld.

Her post drew widespread reactions on social media, with several users sharing their own unsettling experiences.

A netizen, Syafieliot, wrote that they had bitten into what they thought was a boba pearl in a drink purchased at a night market — only to find it was a fly. Another commenter, Mell, claimed to have found a long pinky fingernail mixed in with tepung pelita they bought the day before.

TikTok user Paqyop Gonzales offered a practical explanation, noting that such incidents often stem from improperly washed salad leaves and cabbages.

“Cabbage in particular tends to harbour larvae when it is only partially cut. If it is not washed thoroughly before being added to food, those larvae will end up being consumed,” he warned.
