Malaysia condemns Israel–US attacks on Iran, urges ceasefire and respect for sovereignty
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has strongly condemned the attacks by the Israeli regime and the United States on Iran, describing them as “barbaric” and a flagrant breach of international law, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the strikes target a sovereign nation and breach both the principles of the United Nations Charter and established norms of international law.
He warned that continued military action against Iran is highly risky, escalating tensions and threatening stability across the Gulf region.
“We are of the view that continued military action against the free and sovereign nation of Iran, regardless of differences in policy or stance toward that country, runs contrary to principles agreed upon by the international community.
“As a free and independent nation, Malaysia calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and for all disputes to return constructively to the negotiating table,” Anwar said while tabling a motion in Parliament condemning the attacks.
He also said that the international community, including the United Nations, has repeatedly reminded member states to adhere to international law, citing recent statements by secretary-general Antonio Guterres.
“Israel is the only country that consistently violates international resolutions.
“Today it is Iran; yesterday Lebanon; before that Iraq and Syria; and the massacres of the Palestinian people in Gaza continue to this day.
“These actions are clearly contrary to the international order and must be strongly opposed.”
The Prime Minister called for regional cooperation with Gulf states to restore unity and defend the freedom and sovereignty of the region.
“Not many countries take a firm stance in situations like this, but after consultations with my colleagues, Malaysia has decided to state its position clearly, upholding sovereignty and opposing aggression.
“What Israel has done, with the backing of the United States, is a blatant violation of the international order.
“Malaysia reiterates its condemnation and calls for an immediate end to hostilities and the restoration of peace in the Gulf region and Tehran,” he said.
