Malaysia to work with Russia, China on Iran crisis, urges peace and protects citizens abroad

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said Malaysia will use its strong diplomatic relations with China and Russia to push for an end to the escalating violence in Iran, while continuing to monitor the safety of Malaysians in the region.

He stressed that Malaysia will continue engaging directly with Russia and China, noting that statements have already been issued by both countries condemning the attacks on Iran.

“The Foreign Minister will contact their counterparts to request continued support in stopping the brutal attacks on Iran. We will assist, even though our capacity is limited,” he said.

Anwar also said Malaysia’s role in negotiations and international diplomacy is limited, particularly when it comes to Israel and the United States.

“Earlier initiatives by our friends, such as the President of Indonesia (to mediate the crisis), were also raised.

“Naturally, we appreciate those efforts. However, Malaysia’s stance is somewhat firmer. We do not recognise Israel, and Israel has shown no signs of courtesy, respect for humanity, or diplomatic protocol,” he said.

Anwar added that Malaysia will continue cooperating with Asean, Islamic countries, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and Arab nations to contribute to peace efforts.

On citizen safety, the Prime Minister highlighted that embassy staff are working around the clock to protect Malaysians in the conflict zone.

“For those wishing to return home, we are handling flight arrangements, although safe routes are still unavailable because the area is considered unsafe.

“Some flights from Saudi Arabia must detour through Turkey and Asia, returning at a higher cost,” he said.

He acknowledged the limitations of embassy facilities, especially for Malaysian children requiring protection, and expressed gratitude to Asean and other countries that have issued statements calling for the attacks to stop.

“Nevertheless, Malaysia’s stance remains firmer in this matter,” Anwar said.
