The next-generation 2027 Toyota Fortuner has been spotted testing in Thailand, and while the spyshots only reveal a heavily camouflaged prototype, they give us just enough to start piecing things together.

We have taken a closer look at the images and visualised what the new Fortuner could look like, using the recently revealed 2026 Toyota Hilux as a reference point.

The newly surfaced front spyshot shows a more upright and squared-off fascia. The grille appears larger and more vertical than the outgoing model, with what looks like a mesh pattern beneath the camouflage wrap.

The headlamps are slimmer and more angular, with daytime running lights now positioned along the upper edge of the housing rather than along the lower portion as seen on the current Fortuner. This mirrors the design language introduced on the ninth-generation Hilux.

If the Fortuner follows the pickup closely, expect a horizontal light signature, a wider grille frame with integrated Toyota lettering on higher variants, and a more sculpted bumper elements with vertical accents at the corners. The test unit’s lower bumper also appears chunkier, suggesting a tougher, more SUV-centric interpretation of the Hilux’s face.

From the side, proportions remain largely unchanged. The Fortuner retains its upright stance, strong shoulder line and the distinctive kink near the rear door at the C-pillar. This suggests Toyota is evolving the design rather than reinventing it.

The wheel arches appear slightly more squared, and the side surfacing looks cleaner, but overall the silhouette stays recognisably Fortuner.
The rear spyshot hints at what could be a full-width taillight treatment. However, as with the current model, the central strip may simply be trim rather than an illuminated element.

The rear bumper has clearly been reshaped, with a more integrated lower section and less protruding cladding compared to the outgoing Fortuner. A roof-mounted spoiler remains, and the number plate housing stays on the tailgate.

Mechanically, the new Fortuner is expected to ride on the updated IMV ladder-frame platform shared with the new Hilux. Engine options are likely to carry over, including a 2.8-litre turbodiesel and a 2.7-litre naturally-aspirated petrol.

The more interesting question is electrification. With the Hilux now offered in battery-electric form in selected markets, Toyota could extend its multi-pathway strategy to the Fortuner as well. A fully electric, body-on-frame SUV would be a notable development, though nothing has been confirmed.
