The Plantation and Commodities Ministry aims to consolidate RM32.8 billion in timber exports by 2030, building on current annual exports exceeding RM20 billion

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities is targeting consolidated timber exports worth RM32.8 billion by 2030.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the goal is anchored in the National Agri-Commodity Policy 2030 and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

She revealed that Malaysia’s annual timber and wood-based product exports are already valued at over RM20 billion.

Wooden furniture now constitutes 43% of the country’s total timber exports.

“The ministry is working closely with our agencies, including the Malaysian Timber Industry Board, the Malaysian Timber Council, and the Malaysian Timber Certification Council,” Noraini said in a speech delivered by deputy secretary-general Datuk Razali Mohamad.

She added that the collaboration aims to support the industry in accessing new markets and adopting sustainable practices.

The minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair 2026.

She noted that Malaysian-made furniture remains highly sought after in key international markets.

These include the United States, the Middle East, Australia and across ASEAN.

“This is a clear testament to the quality, craftsmanship, and reliability that define our local manufacturers,” she stated.

The timber industry is the third-largest contributor to Malaysia’s commodity exports.

MIFF 2026 is being held from March 4 to 7 at two venues in Kuala Lumpur.

The event spans 100,000 square metres and features over 700 exhibitors.

It expects to welcome 20,000 buyers from 140 countries and regions.

Organisers have previously targeted US$1.31 billion in on-site orders for the fair.
